Welcome to the website of the Luxembourg branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. There was a time when the mere survival of Irish traditional music was not at all secure. Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (Irish pronunciation: [ˈkɔwal̪ˠt̪ˠəsˠ ˈcoːl̪ˠt̪ˠoːɾʲiː ˈeːɾʲən̪ˠ]; meaning "Society of the Musicians of Ireland") is the primary Irish organisation dedicated to the promotion of the music, song, dance and the language of Ireland. At a meeting in St. Mary’s Hall, Mullingar on January 6th, 1952, the title of the organisation was changed from Cumann Ceoltóirí na hÉireann to Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. It is a branch of the Irish Cultural Organisation Comhaltas Ceoltóirí­ Éireann. The Luxembourg branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Craobh Naomh Fiachra, was founded in Luxembourg in 1982, under the auspices of the Circle Culturel of the European Communities. At a meeting in St. Mary’s Hall, Mullingar on January 6th, 1952, the title of the organisation was changed from Cumann Ceoltóirí na hÉireann to Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.From this point on, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann grew from strength to strength to become a great annual National Festival attended by traditional musicians, singers, and dancers from all parts of Ireland and overseas.

Comhaltas now has a membership of several million people. The first Fleadh Cheoil was organised in Mullingar, County Westmeath. Its mandate is to promote traditional Irish music and culture, and there are more than 400 branches around the world. The cream of traditional Irish musicians attending the Fleadh played a major role in furthering its aim.On October 14th, 1951, at Árus Ceannt, Thomas Street, Dublin, the first standing Committee of Cumann Ceoltóirí na hÉireann was elected.

Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann was founded by musicians in 1951 to promote Irish traditional music and culture. Within a few years, this had become a National Festival attended by thousands of traditional musicians, singers and dancers from all over Ireland and soon also from overseas.Branches of Comhaltas have formed in every county in Ireland and also abroad, organising classes, concerts, and sessions in local communities.Comhaltas is now a world-wide organisation, with active branches in the United States, Britain, Canada, Japan and elsewhere.

It has over 450 branches on 4 continents and operates in 15 countries. The Saint John branch of Comhaltas is the eastern-most chapter in Canada.
